Every interaction matters: Yazmin’s role as a Correctional Officer

When Yazmin steps into Clarence Correctional Centre each day, she knows she’ll be doing much more than maintaining security. It’s her empathy, patience, and genuine ability to connect with others that shapes her work as a Correctional Officer.

In a role built around relationships, she believes her most important tools are communication and compassion. For Yazmin, making a positive impact starts with every interaction.

Building relationships & encouraging change

"Supporting inmates with their rehabilitation journey involves developing positive relationships, providing mentorship, and encouraging behavioural change," she explains.

Correctional Officers play a vital role in creating a secure and structured environment while fostering positive interactions.

Their work involves regular headcounts, monitoring inmate activities, and supporting rehabilitation programs that help inmates develop positive behaviours and life skills.

A supportive culture built on empathy

A strong, supportive culture makes all the difference at Clarence Correctional Centre. Mutual respect, camaraderie, and a shared commitment to positive outcomes create an environment where Correctional Officers can confidently navigate challenges.

"We share thoughts and feelings after challenging situations," Yazmin says. "This helps us process experiences, reassure each other, and provide emotional support."

Structured debriefings ensure ongoing support, reflection, and continuous learning from each experience.

Lessons learned on the job

Becoming a Correctional Officer has given Yazmin new insights into resilience, adaptability, and teamwork, lessons she didn’t fully anticipate before stepping into the role.

"Through training, you learn essential skills like effective communication, patience, and problem-solving," she says. Beyond formal training, Yazmin has developed confidence in handling unpredictable situations, staying composed under pressure, and working closely with her team to find solutions.

Finding purpose & pride

Yazmin takes great pride in the strong bonds she has formed with her colleagues. "Working together as a cohesive team to overcome challenges, support each other, and succeed in our roles is very rewarding," she says.

"Also, knowing that our efforts contribute to a system that aims to rehabilitate and reintegrate individuals back into society gives a profound sense of purpose.
