Courtney’s job as a Safety and Incident Management Service (SIMS) patrol officer at Fiona Stanley Hospital is anything but predictable... and that’s exactly why she loves it.
Every shift brings something different - assisting clinical staff, supporting patients, and responding to emergencies.
The variety keeps her engaged, while the flexibility of shift work gives her more time to enjoy life outside the hospital.
One moment, Courtney might be assisting nurses with a patient in distress. The next, she’s responding to an emergency call or securing valuables for a patient heading into surgery.
“We deal with all kinds of situations—like emergencies inside and outside the hospital,” she explains. “We assist staff, support patients who need extra help, and ensure safety within the hospital. Every day is different.”
At its core, the role is about keeping people safe—patients, visitors, and hospital staff. The work is fast-paced, sometimes unpredictable, but always meaningful.
For Courtney, the best part of the job is knowing she’s never alone in a tough situation.
“I feel really well looked after by the team and management,” she says.
“If I don’t understand something or I’m worried about getting it wrong, my team is always there to help and encourage me.”

Support isn’t just about words—it’s about action. When she’s handling a challenging or aggressive situation, there’s always backup nearby. “We’re all in it together, and that makes a huge difference,” she adds.
A role like this isn’t just about the work... it needs to fit your life. With 12-hour shifts and 24/7 rostering, Courtney can plan ahead and make the most of her time off.
“I have more free time, and I can plan ahead,” Courtney explains. “I’m also learning every day, which makes the job even more rewarding.”
“You’ll love it here. The team is supportive, and they guide you every step of the way,” she says. “Some moments will get your heart racing, but you’re always supported. And learning how to handle security situations is a skill that’s useful anywhere.”
